Need help with subtracting image from text

I am attaching a file that shows what I am trying to do but fail. How can I achieve what I am trying to do? Thanks

The text is outlined, right?

Ungroup it and make a compound path.

Bring it to the front.

Select text and nest and make a clipping mask.

Not sure from that exactly what result you want, but try Exclude instead.

Thank you for responding. I am trying to have the lines formed by the nest in the text. and the rest of the image is no longer there. Excluded didn't add the lines to the text and it merged the two images as one.
