New Guy Question - 3D Rendered Objects

I'm quite new to Illustrator (have completed the CIAB book though) and have a question. This is not a bug of any kind - just me not quite understanding something.

I've made a couple of 3D cylinders and rendered them using Ray Tracing (Vector not selected in the Options window). Additionally, I've made a couple of filled circles. I want to join all these together as a single object. I selected them and tried using the Shape Builder Tool then the Pathfinder options but of course it's not working. There is something different about the 3D rendered objects than the circles I made, and I presume it's that the 3D rendered objects aren't (or don't contain) paths. If that's true, exactly what are the 3D objects (format?) and is there a way to join each of those, and the vector art (circles) so they are a single unit?

Thanks very much for any help.

Correct answer Ton Frederiks

You have to make them a single unit before applying the 3D effect. The rendered result with Ray Traycing is are not vector anymore.

@Ton Frederiks - Thanks for this. I kind of thought that's where this would go. Appreciate the help 🙂 .
