New User: .PNG file in Illustrator

Hi there,

I am new to Adobe and am currently on trial using Illustrator.  One of my friends created an image in Illustrator then sent it to me as a .PNG file.

I want to be able to easily change the image coloring and background coloring; however, I cannot find a way to do this.  I believe it may have to do with the fact that there are individual pieces to the design but it is saved down as one file so the pieces cannot be broken up (not sure if that makes sense).

In short, I want to upload a image file to Illustrator and make color changes.  I know it is a simple request, but I have spent hours watching videos and trying on my own with no luck.  Any help is appreciated!

Best,

John

since you have illustrator, get them to send you the illustrator file instead. there is no need to deal with PNGs. illustrator is not an editor for PNGs.

Easiest solution would be to ask him for the vector file. That isn't always an option though. If it's a fairly simple image, you can try to use Image Trace to vectorize it.

You will have to redraw the outlines or request a vector-based version in the first place. Otherwise you use Photoshop to deal with pixel images.
