Not able to select style of brush to create new one.

I am taking an online Illustrator clas and one lesson has me creating a new Scatter Style brush.  WHen I click on new brush the pop up menu has Sactter and Art brush listed but they are not able to be selected.  I cant figure how to make them a selectable option.  I have inlcuded a screen shot of the menu.  Any suggestions?
