Number of artboards visible in Illustrator different to visible pages in pdf query?

Hey... wonder if anyone can help? When opening a Guidelines pdf from a client, I can see 14 pages, yet when I open the pdf in Illustrator there are 79 artboards which includes much more content than in the pdf!! I have never seen this before and wonder why I cannot see these pages in the pdf and how it is possible in the first place? Very strange but hoping someone might elighten me? Thank you.

    Whoever made the file explicitly decided they only wanted 14 pages visible in the PDF, regardless of the number in the AI file. If I were to receive a file like that from someone, I don't think I would second-guess that decision.

    If you save a PDF from an Illustrator file with 10 artboards, and tell it to only include artboards 1-5, as long as you leave 'Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities' checked in the PDF options, it'll save 5 pages to the PDF side of the file (which Acrobat or other PDF viewer can open), but won't affect the AI side of the file, so Illustrator will still see 10 artboards.

    Thanks Doug.. we only received the pdf from a client so if we hadnt opened up the pdf in illustrator we wouldn't have known there were more pages.. so a bit in the dark...which I thought strange but thanks for your answer.. it helps to explain but think maybe there should be some way of seeing that there are more pages/artboards to the doc than visible pages..thank you anyway... best wishes, jac
