Question

Objects in Illustrator File are Missing

Hi, all.

For context, I am designing a sewing pattern, and I can't see some markings on and pieces of the pattern.

I *think* my AI might have crashed or had an update, because when I went to File > Open Recent Files and clicked on my freshest stuff, Adobe said it couldn't find it (even though it was saved locally and I have been working on it for weeks now). I'm on AI 27.5 and Windows 11 Home on a MS Surface.

Weird, I thought. I restarted my computer and fired up AI again. Now I can't find notches (used to match edges of pattern pieces) and a pattern piece. (FWIW the notches on my sewing pattern are tiny circles.)

I've gone through all the layers and checked visibility for these objects, but it's like they don't exist. I'm at a loss. Ideas? TIA.

So did the crash happen while you were saving?

With saving files there are a couple of things that are important:

1. Do not save to a server directly from Illustrator. Illustrator might (!) frak out.

2. Uncheck "Save in background" in the preferences

3. Save multiple versions (just in case something goes wrong)

4. Save often, save regularly

5. Do not bring yourself into a position where you have to rely on File Recovery. It's fine when it works, but even then: it's fine to have it for the last 20 minutes of your work. But it might fail. Usually it will fail when you most desprately need it.
