Obnoxious "highlighting" behavior in Illustrator 29.2.1

Video example

I got a "new" 2019 iMac and installed AI 29.2.1. A lot of the times when I select multiple objects, expand objects, merge objects, etc., it has this really annoying behavior where the entire program freezes, a series of vertices get selected/highlighted, and a line runs across the rulers. This totally slows down my workflow and is extremely obnoxious. I've never experienced it in any previous versions! Is this a setting I can disable? Thank you!

Hi @graphicd22604340,

I'm sorry you're facing this issue—it does sound unusual. Before diving into troubleshooting, I’d recommend updating Illustrator to the latest version (29.3.1) and seeing if that resolves the problem. If the issue persists, could you share a few more details?

  • Which operating system (exact version of macOS) are you using?
  • When did this issue start? Were there any recent updates or new app extensions installed?
  • Does turning off GPU Performance (Cmd + E) improve the situation?

We’re here to help and will do our best to get this sorted for you!

Regards,

Srishti

it still persists after updating

Wouldn't disabling GPU performance drastically affect the performance of my software? That is not a viable solution

macOS Sequoia 5.3, it's been happening since I acquired the computer a couple weeks ago.
