Question

Offset path doesn't work.

Why can't I get offset path to work like it is supposed to work. When I open offset path, the panel has a default number and when I change the number and click okay the original "or the default??" is  what is used. I can't change the offset to the number I choose. I  clear the settings in the appearence panel and that has no effect. I am  an experiednced user and have never had this problem before.  This must be a bug because it makes no sense. I've tried shutting Illustrator down and turning it back on resetting the prefs to points -set the new document to points but that has no effect.

Ok. I just saw an issue with my brushes. Brush would not give me the direction when I created the new one no matter what I did. Weirdly it was the document. The document must have gone corrupt. Once I created a new document it worked great. Have you tired it with a new document?

I have the same problem i Type a word "neon" because i am trying to make a neon sign. but the offset path isn't working. it won't do anything with negative numbers. i type in -5 and nothing changes, but if i type in 1 or 2 the shape, or outline just explodes! i don't know why it isn't working, can someone please help me.

If the shape "explodes" with a value of 1 then possibly your are working with a very small (tiny) object. You will need to input much smaller numbers. ALso for the negative value.

In case you are reduing the size of the object: is it large enough to do so?

Also: when did you last restart the computer?

Dear Monnika,
I don't know but it is acting really buggy. I will shut the computer down. If I go to effect-offset path it appears to work correctly-it responds to  different offset sizes. -BUT   the original center path is still there  because I hove over it it lights up but a can't apply the intended 1 pt stroke to it. It appears a sausage shape. I chose round miter and that works. I will now shut the computer down and try that.

Yes and if you are on a Mac resetting the preferences is not always enough. Apple caches preferences so killing the cfpref in the Activities Monitor (do not kill the root) or restarting your computer after you reset your preferences is necessary. Also trying the Application with another user on the system (Mac or PC) will let you know if it is a User Preference causing the problem. Hence if it works great in the new user then you know it is something with the original user.
