When I go to offset path on a font, it does not work.  I have preview checked but it still does not respond when I change numbers.  I have no idea how to fix.

    Bi,

there 3 ways to offset path with text.

Depending on the purpose you can opt for one of these.

    Outlined font

wirh this method you will lose every edit ability.

    1. convert text to outline by menu type >  text to outline
    2. Than go to Menu > edit > path > offset path

    Appearance txt

    1. Go to menu > window > appearance  pallet
    2. add  a new stroke with the stroke icon bellow left.
    3. Make the stroke big enough; example 6 pt
    4. In that same pallet drag the created stroke bellow the 'Contents'
    5. if necessary encrease the stroke thiknes.

    Combined Appearance and filter

    Rather more advanced technique

    1. Go to menu > window > appearance  pallet
    2. add  a new stroke with the stroke icon bellow left.
    3. Make the stroke big enough; example 6 pt
    4. Select stroke in appearance pallet
    5. Go to Menu > filter  > path > offset path

One of these will certainly work

    Hi Melissa,

Giving your steps that didn't work plus a screenshot would be helpful, otherwise we are guessing. But try this:

    1. Type text > Switch to the Selection tool
    2. Add a stroke using the Appearance panel
    3. Click the Fx > Path > Offset Path > Enable Preview > Change the Offset (can be negative)

Note: there are multiple ways to do the same thing in Illustrator. Use a different method if you prefer (and if it works).

    4. Make edits to the Offset Path and / or to the stroke. Use the Appearance panel to edit the Offset path. You can also hyperlink into the stroke.

You can use the Appearance section of the new Properties panel. Click the ... to open the Appearance panel.

And what happens when you try? pLease show. Also: check the input values. They might be too high.

Could you please explain from the beginning exactly what steps you went through to generate your text and the steps that led to your problem? I know this sounds fussy, but it may be important.

... and the exact sizes and input values are also important, because Offset path generally shows no result, when the unput value is too large.
