offset path problem

I'm using Illustrator and I'm trying to use the offset path tool and it is greyed out how do I fix it?

What are you trying to offset? Is something selected (stupid I know but you have no idea how often that happens!) and can you please post an image of what you are trying to do along with layers panel expanded so we can see what is going on. Right now, the question is too general to give an answer.
