Opened [Stock] Asset 478731342.ai in Illustrator 27.1.1 and only two layers show-
All text on one, and the background on the other...

I opened this same .ai asset on a website called Photopea, and I see dozens of layers for the individual letters in the same file.

Why can I see the layers in some rando website and not in Adobe Illustrator, which I pay for, with a Adobe stock image, which I also pay for? I admit I am not a very experienced Illustrator user but why can't I expand these layers? I have no drop down/arrow like in any other .ai file... please help! My brain is fried!

In the Layers panel menu go to the Layers panel options. In the options turn off "Show only Layers"

You must have turned on that option at some time in the past, because it's not the default setting.

@Monika Gause ,

FYI: The asset is downloaded as such from stock.

I currently do not know how it's done, but selecting the artwork and copy/paste into a new file shows the layers. This is clearly for the Illustrator forum and not for stock. So, I will move this to the correct forum.
