OpenType doing absolutely nothing with eligible fonts on Illustrator

I have been trying all of the commands with several different fonts. It highlights them and indicates that it's on but does absolutely nothing to the font. I am new to this and just want to know if I might be doing something wrong.

    You mean the options in the OpenType panel?

     

    They only work when the font actually has them. When you open the Glyphs panel and scroll through the glyphs, does it show any Swashes, ligatures or any of the other stuff?
