Question

Panels don't appear and can't be opened

I'm on an iMac Pro runnin Mojave 10.14.3

2.5  GHz Intel Xeon W

128 GB RAM

Radeon Pro Vega 64 16368 MB graphics

Randomly, when opening Illustrator, only the tools panels shows up. All the other panels (swatches, libraries, colour, etc.) are either not there or only the icons appear. When I click the icons (when there) the panel doesn't expand. If I select the panel from the "windows" pull down menu the panel still doesn't appear. The ONLY way I have found to get the panels back is to restart Illustrator and that only works some of the time.

All of my Adobe apps are updated. This issue has been happening since the update after Adobe MAX in 2018.

My apps are all up to date.

Has anyone else encountered this?

Is there a way to fix it?

When you updated your Illustrator did you have the option to "import previous settings and preferences" checked in the advanced options that are offered during the install? If so, that could be the problem. Using this option has caused problems for many users. Try trashing your preferences and see if it fixes things.

To do so on a Mac:

The User Library folder in which Illustrator’s preferences are stored is hidden by default on most Macintoshes. To access it make sure that Illustrator is closed and click on the desktop to launch a Finder Window (Command-N).With this window in column view follow the path User>Home folder (it’s the folder with an icon that looks like a house—it may have the user’s name rather than “Home”) and click on the Home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. “Library” will now appear within the Home folder. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the folder called “Adobe Illustrator <Version #> Settings” (earlier versions of Illustrator might just say “Adobe Illustrator”) and the file called “com.adobe.Illustrator.plist” and delete both that folder and that file. When Illustrator is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files in this manner is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Is the application frame turned on?

When you updated, did you migrate the preferences? If so, you might want to reset them. Try and rename the Preferences folder (that way you have them as a backup in case it oesn't help)

Since it's already Friday: if you need to get this to work quickly and pref reset doesn't work, then I would contact Customer Care now.

Contact Customer Care

Only they can log into your system and they are not available on the weekend.

Thanks for the fast response!!
I have the application frame turned off and I didn't migrate any preferences. The problem isn't desperate at the moment. It's something that's been happening randomly for months and I always seem to be able to fix it by rebooting the program (sometimes 2 or 3 times). I just figured I should look into a solution before/if it becomes permanent.
I'm going to try and rename the preferences folder and see if that helps.
