Question

Pantones appear washed out

Why are all the Pantone colours washed out when I preview them on my screen? For instance, Pantone 032 red literally appears pink. Black is gray. I tried RGB and CMYK mode and playing with the colour preview. I understand that the screen is never going to match the Pantone book exactly without a color management system, but I'm using a decent apple display and I never had this problem with older versions of illustrator and indesign. The worst is it's still washed out when I export a pdf.

The only solution I found was to 'mix' my own preview colour by changing the swatch colour mode to 'lab'

How does it print? I wondering if there might be an issue with you monitor?

They print fine because we just send the pantone # to the printer. I thought it was my monitor until I started working on another machine and I had the same problem. Maybe they both just need calibration but it only started happening when I updated from an older 2016 version of CC. I've been putting off trying to figure it out until recently!

Here's a screenshot of a PMS 032 Red Fill in Illustrator. It definitely looks red on my Mac monitor. If this looks pink on yours, you probably have to calibrate.
