Question

Paste Remembers Layer

Adobe Illustrator CC 2026 (30.5.1)
Edition: Windows 11 Pro (64 bit) - Version 25H2
OS Build: 26200.8655
64.0 GB RAM

Installed ALL Astute Graphics plugins.

I've checked and set the Layers Panel default to: Paste Remembers Layers.

Issue: Paste does NOT Remember Layers.

Tried: Paste, Paste In Front, Paste In Back, Paste In Place, Paste On All Artboards, Paste Under My Legs, Paste Over My Shoulders, Paste Over My Arms, and Paste Over My Head.  All options FAILED.

When I copy and paste a single layer from a new Illustrator file with just two objects I start a new Illustrator document and paste those in there, both objects are pasted on a single layer.

Please help.

Try resetting your illustrator preferences, anything unusual not working usually points to corrupt preferences.

@jeffwill1969 I am not sure what you expect.

If you have Paste Remembers Layers on, copy the content of a layer and paste it in a new document, it will:

Paste on an existing layer with the same name.

Create a new layer with the same name if such a layer does not exist.

In your example, if you copy a layer with two objects, it will paste a layer with two objects.

    Ton,

Your response prompted me to go back and read my post.  The description of my problem was poorly written.  Thank you. 😐

    Hi @jeffwill1969,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I tried to reproduce this on my end but wasn't able to. To take it forward, could you share:

    1. A brief screen recording of the issue
    2. A sample file where the problem is reproducible

You can upload both to Google Drive, Dropbox, or similar and share a public link here or via DM.

    Looking forward to your update.
