Pathfinder Divide not deleting as normal with Puckered Circle

Hi, 

I'm struggling to erase these circles (on top the puckered circle aka "star") out of the star. I've been trying to use the Pathfinder + Divide tool, the ungrouping and deleting the circles within, but everytime I do that - it deletes the small circles (leaving no trace of it) instead of erasing the circle shape from the star shape. 

 

Any suggestions?

You can put them at the place where you want them to be and then create a compound path outof the star and those circles. If they do not punch automatically, open the Attributes panel and set the fill rule to even-odd
