Pattern swatch is not cutting out surrounding elements?

Question

I make Illustrator patterns pretty frequently and it's always pretty much a smooth process, but I'm having some big issues with this last design I created. When I go to create the pattern swatch it wont cut out/clip the elements that fall outside of the box that create the repeat. I have a no fill/no stroke box on the bottom layer so have no idea what could be preventing the pattern from "clipping" the outer elements. Any ideas?

Okay I figured it out ... not exactly but fixed it lol. I deleted the old no fill/ no stroke box in the back - made a new one ... and viola ... somehow it fixed it. Something must've been wrong with the other one idk. So when in doubt - I probably should've tried that first lol. Thanks

Are you sure the box is closed? Do you see something other than Path or Rectangle when you select it in the Layers panel?What happens if you use the Pattern maker: Object > Pattern > Make?
