PDF Coloring Pages Losing Print Quality After Exporting From Illustrator

Hi everyone,

I create printable coloring pages for kids and usually export them as PDFs from Adobe Illustrator for my website: [Link removed]

Recently, I noticed that some line art becomes slightly blurry or thinner after exporting the file, especially when users print the pages from mobile devices or lower-end printers. The original vector artwork looks perfectly sharp inside Illustrator.

I already tried:

  • Exporting with High Quality Print preset
  • Saving as vector PDF
  • Increasing stroke width slightly
  • Testing RGB vs CMYK

but some pages still lose clarity after download or printing.

Does anyone know the best Illustrator export settings for printable black-and-white coloring pages so the outlines remain crisp on all devices and printers?

Would appreciate any workflow suggestions from people who prepare printable PDFs professionally.

How does it look in the PDF? When you zoom in, does the outline still stay sharp??

If your line art is truly vector then the issue is at the users’ end. It would depend on the resolution of their printer; the program they are printing from, and maybe just a setting in the app. For instance, if they print it from Acrobat, but “as an image” and have a low resolution set,  that will hobble the output.

You would be better raining your question in the illustrator forum. https://community.adobe.com/p/illustrator
