Pencil Tool Won't Modify Shapes

I've been trying to modify/edit shapes in Illustrator using the pencil tool, but it won't allow me to edit any shapes. I make sure I've selected the shape with the direct selection tool and try to modify it like I've seen a lot of others do in tutorials, but when I try to edit a shape, it just creates a new one instead.... any ideas on how to fix it?
