Penrose tiling Illustrator symbols -- pattern making

Short of scripting your own, there are few pattern making apps out there that have penrose or other aperiodic tiling.

Is there any procedure you could use to penrose tile using illustrator symbols? That way you can edit the tiles after the tiling is done ... leading to some much more irregular/natural looking distributions.

Export from Repper.app then somehow replace all the shapes of one colour with a symbol – would not work because the tiles will have different orientation?

If the Penrose tiles (or say Einstein tiles) could be replaced with Illustrator symbols, you could then draw whatever you wanted inside those tiles after your area is tiled.
