Pink measurement lines popping up

Illustrator v 29.2. When using the direct selection tool, if I hold down the option and shift key to select other objects I get pink lines popping up all over the screen showing the distance between neighbouring objects. I find them a distraction only and of little value, how do I swith them off?

When you have an object selected, Option calls the Dimension tool for hovered objecs, yes. But why do you need to use Option and Shift together? Shift is enough. What's a reason to use them together?
