Place feature coming in as group not link

Hello Community, I hope you can help me.

This past week working in Adobe Illustrator 29.1 everytime I "place" another .ai file in my base illustrator doc it comes in as a group.  Inside the group everything is clipped.  It is supposed to be a linked file.

 

Does anyone know what glitch may have corrupted the "place" function?

Try to make the window wider and select a file.

Did you check if the Link option in the place dialog?

Hello, no link option I saw in dialog promts.  Can you tell me if there is another dialog to find the link.  This is a really recent bug for me.  Had no problem placing .ai files with .ai files 3 weeks ago.
