Placed, clipped images resized and repositioned upon opening file. Cray-zee!

I have a multi-artboard file that has two images placed and then clipped multiple times in the file. I saved and closed the file last night. When I opened it this morning, the placed images were HUGE, like too big to fit on the artboard, and no where near where they should have been. I basically had to rebuild, thank goodness I have a PDF to refer to for positioning.

Ai 30.1, Mac OS 26.2.

Screen shot shows the layers with one of the images selected so you can see where it is on the art board, and its size. It’s supposed to be showing in a box in the middle of the 2nd largest artboard. This compostion is placed in the file multiple times. They all behave the same.

So far it’s only happening with this one file.

Any thoughts on why this happens and how to fix it? Thanks.

When opening a Cray Zee file, some users notice that placed or clipped images are automatically resized or repositioned, which can disrupt the intended layout. This often happens due to differences in file resolution, software version, or workspace settings, causing images to shift relative to frames or clipping masks. To prevent this, ensure consistent document settings, update to the latest version of Cray Zee, and use linked images with proper scaling instead of embedding them. Regularly saving backups can also help maintain the original design when reopening files.

    Hello @dunazee

Thanks for reaching out. I hope Bill’s suggestions helped resolve the problem. If not, please try turning off Background Save from Illustrator’s preferences and share your observations.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Try embedding the images rather than keeping them as linked. With all of the clipping involved it seems like a safer bet for stability if the images are embedded. You can embed linked images through the Links Panel pull-down menu. Once you’ve embedded the file the chain icon that appears to the right of the image name will disappear.
