PMS Color Conflict

I receive customer art and it will come in with PMS colors.  Illustrator will tell me there is a conflict with an existing PMS color in my book.  It gives me the choice of merging the swatches or adding the swatch.  If I merge my rip won't see the swatch and presents the color as CMYK.  I need spot colors for my work.  When I add I end up with extra swatches and can't seem to delete these extras.  I would like to start fresh with the color book if there is a way, but then I also need to know how to deal with the other issues of conflicting/merging/adding swatches or I will be right back to the problem I started with soon.  Any help would be appreciated. Adobe Illustrator CC 2017.

If you are getting that message, that means the clipboard you are pasting has a global color name than matches exactly an existing global color name in the document, but the numerical values do not match.

Since you cannot merge or get rid of a color that most likely means you have a spot channel in a linked image with the color name you are trying to merge or delete.

If you are indeed printing to spot , then the color values do not matter as you will be swapping out an ink for that so merging will be fine. Adobe went to LAB color space sometime around CS6, so that often causes this error to come up.

If you need more help, please post screenshots of the 2 color swatch option so we can see the values/colorpsace and better explain this. A list of all the ink stations you plan to use would also be helpful.
