Point selection using Lasso tool?

How can use the lasso tool by point-clicking out a selection, rather than just freehanding drawing? For example, I'm trying to make a irregular shape with straight edges as my selection, but the lasso only allows me to "draw" out a shape. The rectangular or ellipse marquee tool isn't what I need either, because those are just simple rectangle or circle selections.

 

This is simply an option-click with lasso tool in Photoshop, why not in Illustrator?

A polygon lasso tool is requested from time to time, but currently it isn't available in Illustrator.

 

Also, there is no Ellipse Selection tool.
