Question

Popup window lost outside my screens?

I have just noticed that when I want to make a new file in AI and I select File - New, I dont see the pop-up window with the alternatives. Instead AI just seems frozen until I press Esc or Enter. This makes me suspect that the popup window is lost somewhere in the "limbo space" between my dual screen setup. I am working both at home and at the office with my laptop (Windows 10 Enterprise) and have different screen setups, and that is what I think could be the reason. (I assume I have opened a new document with a different display setup, and the popup window remains at that location.)

Is there a way to sort of "recall popup windows" to the main screen somehow? If not, I think it would be a useful feature. I don't know if I will be able to locate the popup window by rearranging my display setup, or if there is another solution?

I'm not sure if you ever managed to solve this, but I was able to fix this by attaching a new screen so all my screens could be re-formatted (I have a drawing tablet with a screen and just connected it. I was able to see the popup window after that!) Potentially, you could disconnect your second screen for a moment (or even disconnect it from your settings) and see if the automatic formatting shows the popup window.

Hope this helps!

Thank you Winterj92255543, I bring my laptop between the office and my home every week, and have additional Wacom screens at both places (with different configurations), plus that I also connect it to various conference room projectors and screens at work. Still I haven't been able to find the "Open-window" somewhere, unfortunately.

I was thinking a Illustrator version update could reset this, but that hasn't happened yet either.

It's a case of "annoying but still manageable problem" so I haven't been digging too deep to resolve it.

Hello @Jörgen_Westin,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Would you mind trying to reset the Workspace or switching to one of the defaults to see if it helps?

Also, try to reset Illustrator's preferences as described in this article (https://adobe.ly/4eMm2Q6) and share your observations.

Disclaimer: Please note that renaming preferences folders will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also save a backup of the folders in case you want to. The location is mentioned above.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello @Jörgen_Westin,

We understand that encountering technical issues can be frustrating. I hope the suggestions shared by Monika helped resolve the problem. If not, kindly try the following steps and check if it helps:

  • Close all Adobe applications
  • Navigate to this directory: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\UXP
  • Rename the UXP folder to UXP.old
  • Relaunch Illustrator

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Anubhav

Hello Anubhav,

and thank you for the suggestion. I have tried many of the suggestions mentioned in the link referred by Monika but none of them worked out for me unfortunately.

Neither did the UXP folder renaming you suggested, I'm afraid. The "New file" popup window is still gone somewhere in the in-between-screens-limbo...

Thanks,

Jörgen

Hello @Jörgen_Westin,

Sorry to hear that the suggestions did not help. Do you have multiple monitors connected to your computer? If yes, kindly try changing the multiple monitor setting (Windows / macOS) to use only one display or switching the primary display and checking if it helps.

If the problem persists, we might need to troubleshoot this on a live session. Please head here (https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen) and select the chat button in the lower-right corner of the page. We can help troubleshoot faster that way.

Thanks,

Anubhav

This is pretty old, but you could try it:

Please: if it helps - don't comment that old thread. Instead you could post in here what helped you.

Give the old post in the old thread a like if you wish so, but please don't post into it. Thank you.
