positive negative problem

I have an illustrator file of paths.  It is similar to a coloring book as I want to create black fill “inside” the lines.  My problem is illustrator is “seeing” the path as whats outside of the lines, basically reversing the negative and positive.  If I select a path, it creates a fill outside the lines, not inside… I must be missing something…
