PPI increases/decreases when exporting

When I try to export a document in AI (with the document set to 72 PPI), if I export it as, say, a PNG and change the scale (such as 2× or a specific width/height), it also changes the PPI. Even though the document has a set PPI, it changes relative to the dimensions when exported.

So if I have a document that’s 500×500 px and export it at 2×, the PPI changes to 144×144.

How do I prevent this from happening without having to open Photoshop and manually change the resolution back?

Illustrator files don't have a resolution. What happens when you instead of entering percentage, enter a certain pixel dimension?

Yes, I know the vectors don’t have a resolution. I’m talking about when exporting as a PNG/raster. The exported PNG’s resolution changes relative to the size you exported it at. So if I export a document @2×, the resolution ends up being 144 PPI.

It does this whether I choose 2× or a certain pixel dimension.
