Question

PPi of images in my illustrator print file is huge (5000+)

I'm hoping someone can help with this & that its an easy fix. I am currently working off of an 8.5x11 brochure template from a print company I frequently use. I work with CMYK print files on the daily, and have never run into an issue like this. the brochure I'm making contains multiple images; on their own the resolution is normal but once placed into illustrator & embedded, they increase to anywhere from 700 ppi to 5000 ppi, which I presume is the reason the illustrator file is 1.5 GB. When I went to rasterize the images and brought them down even to 500, they became extremely pixelated. There is no way I can transfer this working file to my work/the printer with it being this large, can someone explain this/provide a resolution? Thanks!

Lina,

What happens if you Place the images as Linked, then Save a copy as PDF with a suitable PPI for the purpose?

I would not suggest to do that. Automatic downsampling of 5000 ppi or higher to 300 ppi or the like will almost certainly result in blurriness.

This needs to be scaled down with care. Maybe in a couple of steps, each followed by careful sharpening. I would do that in Photoshop.

Monika,

The OP says "on their own the resolution is normal but once placed into illustrator & embedded, they increase to anywhere from 700 ppi to 5000 ppi," which seems to imply that something rather strange may be going on, and question whether there is indeed actual downsampling.

There has still been no answer to the question about scaling from Ton, which might thrown light on this matter.

Apart from that, I doubt whether the world will be destroyed if Lina tries another approach moderately different to what she has already tried.

Do you scale them when placing?
