Problem printing from Illustrator on a Mac M1 running OS 11 or 12

So after I hit command-P, instead of getting the usual Illustrator/ Photoshop print interface, I get a long complicated spiel that ends with the words: Print to file. This in spite of the newly-reinstalled Brother Laser printer driver for mac OS 11 (Big Sur) and 12 (Monterey). Can anyone help? Is this a common problem, a bug, an oversight, or is it a screwup of mine?
