Problem when expanding appearance of text

Hi all, I've run into a problem when trying to expand the stroke on my text in Illustrator. It seems to be deforming the shape of the outlined text entirely and cutting out random holes.

Does anyone know how to fix this so that the expand keeps it original shape? Thanks

How does the original un-stroked font look? Do the glyphs have any overlaps? Such features are common in variable fonts. But overlaps and other odd quirks can be common in grungy "stressed" fonts. Poorly drawn fonts can also have the same problems. If the glyph outline has overlaps and other problems they can be passed on to expanded line strokes or offset path effects.
