problem with assigning graphic styles to objects with embedded properties

Hi Our workflow is AutoCAD to Adobe Illustrator, then we've adjusted the styles of the various layers and created graphic styles from these. Now when we have a new file we want to asign each layer the style. The issue we have is that some objects don't take the properties when selected and asigned. We need to double click to reveal sub/embeded properties and then asign the graphic style to them. This is extreemly time consuming and leads to some items that maybe missed under this workflow. Can anyone advise how to better use the graphic styles to asign to the various layers without having to enter inside double clicking the objects?
