Problem with imported file.

I created this file in another program and saved as PNG (also tried with PDF)1st pic.  Its just text with an outline...but in Illustrator it has a box around it and I can't select the words to add the cut/contour line. Help...

This is an image, if the other program can export vector you would be better off in Illustrator.

If not, you could try Image Trace (there is a button for that in the Properties panel)

Use Color and in the Advanced settings check Ignore White.

Expand when it looks good to you.
