Problem with making a repeat pattern because the bottom no fill, no stroke box isn't making

I'm working on making a repeat pattern In AI. When I copy and paste the background color rectangle, There is no box at the bottom with a square that doesn't have no stroke , no fill. I've tried this many times. Can any one help me?
