Files should not be over 300mb in Illustrator., so first would work on that Do a save as and turn off PDF Compatible. The default is on, but you never need that unless you place in  InDesign or After effects

Also when placing images is almost always better to link so a copy of the high res bitmap is not embedded in the file. 

After that I would look at

• are the links being found
• are the fonts working properly, or some corrupt or old type 1 font
• are there any troublesome characters in the links filenames such as colon or slashes

There shouldn't be any problems. Are you using the same versions of illustrator? 300mb files are quite large so they may take a longer time to open depending on what setup you have..?
