Hi Doug,

Your description has a small flaw. (should be Clipping mask > Make or similar - Not compound path)

 

Another variant is if the logo already is a compound path:

  • Place the image over your logo.
  • Cut.
  • Select the Logo and click on "Draw Inside" button (at the bottom of the Tool Bar).
  • Paste in place.

Create a compound path from the logo if you haven't already, place it over the gold image, select both and use Object > Clipping Mask > Make

I made from the logo compound path and placed it over the gold image but when I'm making from them a compound path, I get this window with 'Can't make a compound path. All objects in a compound path must be paths, and they cannot be brushed or be part of an object'
