Question

Recovery .aid file not opening, no error message, and deletes the file. HELP!!

Hey, hoping someone might have some insight here.

Illustrator crashed on me while working on an untitled file (yes, I know, lesson learned). When I reopened, the recovery dialog popped up showing two files — one saved file and my untitled one. It went through the progress bar like it was recovering both, but then only opened the saved file. The untitled one just... vanished. No error, nothing. Turns out Illustrator deleted the recovery data after "processing" it.

Luckily I have CrashPlan running, so I managed to grab the .aid file before it got wiped. It's 4MB and definitely has data in it — I can see the "AI Crash Recovery Data" header and document metadata when I look at it. I've tried the enableContentRecovery preference trick, tried making the file read-only (which stops the deletion but Illustrator just ignores the file), and even tried an updated version of Illustrator. Nothing works.

Found this thread with someone having the exact same problem. Has anyone figured out a way to manually recover from an .aid file, or know where the diagnostic logs are that might show why recovery is failing? Hours of work in that file and I'd really love to get it back.
Cheers!

Your only hope is that Adobe staff catches up on this once they return to the office on Monday.

Problem with crashes is if they happen the exact moment when an application is saving a file, the file is most likely lost. That is the reason for always saving at least 2 versions of a file. One is not enough, even if you save it every 5 minutes.
