Relinking files no longer works consistently in v 30.2.1

Since updating to Illustrator v 30.2.1 on Windows 11, I’ve been having a lot of problems relinking files. It will generally work correctly once or twice, and then when I try to relink any more files, nothing happens when I click the relink icon; ie, file explorer doesn’t open to let me choose a file to replace the link with. I end up having to close and reopen Illustrator to be able to relink any more files, and the cycle repeats.

I rely on this functionality a lot in my day to day template based work, so I ended up reverting to 30.1, and everything is working perfectly again, so this appears to be a bug specific to the latest release.

Okay, I’ve had a chance to test some files over the last couple of days, and it seems like resetting the preferences has resolved my problem. I appreciate the help and will let you know if I start having issues again, but it seems good so far!

Hi @i-b-tex,

Thanks for reaching out, and I’m sorry you’re facing this issue. Just to confirm, does this happen with every document you work on, or only with specific files?

I tested the same workflow on Windows 11 with Illustrator 30.2.1 and was able to relink files repeatedly without the File Explorer failing to open. This suggests the behavior may be specific to your system environment rather than a widespread issue.

As a first step, please reset Illustrator preferences and then test again. You can follow the instructions here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html
You can also use the manual reset method shown in this video:

After resetting, relaunch Illustrator and try relinking multiple files to see if the issue persists.

To rule out any permission-related concerns, please also try launching Illustrator as an administrator. Right click the Illustrator icon, select Run as administrator, and then test the relink workflow again.

Additionally, to check whether any third party utilities or background services might be interfering, please start Windows in Safe Mode and test the behavior there. Ref:

Please let me know how it goes after trying these steps, and we’ll take it forward based on the results.

Thanks for following up on this @Abhishek Rao. I actually started to experience the same issue today with the older version I’d rolled back to. I’m beginning to think this is actually a file explorer related issue, because the problem seemed to return when I had the “preview pane” open in file explorer, and the previews of the images I was viewing weren’t loading. Illustrator crashed at one point during all of this, and after restarting file explorer, things seemed to be working correctly again. When I’ve had a chance to test the newer version of Illustrator, I’ll see if the problems return and will let you know how that goes.
