repeating pattern troubleshoot CS5

I made a repeating pattern in illustrator CS5. I wanted to change it so I deleted the swatch from the swatches panel. The swatches are gone from the panel, but now all the artwork shows that each art element is filled with the pattern I deleted and I cant make a new pattern. Any solutions?

Just select one of the objects.

Make sure the fill is focused.

In the swatches panel menu select "New Swatch" and hit OK.
