Replace Checkbox Help

Hi,

When I go to File>Place to add an image, the checkboxes are Link, Template, Replace, and Show Import Options. All are greyed out except Show Import Options until I click on an image. Then Link and Template become checkable but Replace does not. Does anyone know how I can get Replace to work? Is there a setting I could change to make this work?

You must have a placed image selected in your document to tell Illustrator what to replace.

Thank you. I have text selected in my document but still don't get the replace option. I'm using Illustrator CC.  Any other thoughts?

When Ton said "image" he was being quite specific: a jpg, png, tiff, or other raster is an image; a linked Illustrator document behaves as an image for replacement purposes, but an embedded one does not, nor does an Illustrator-created shape or text object.
