Request for the Return of DXF Import Functionality with Grouping in Adobe Illustrator

I am requesting the restoration of the functionality in Adobe Illustrator that allows importing DXF files while maintaining their original groupings.

Currently, when importing a DXF file, Illustrator automatically ungroups all elements, including patterns and mold structures. Even when selecting the option to group everything and later attempting to ungroup selectively, the original groupings are lost.

In Adobe Illustrator 2021, this issue did not exist.

After contacting Adobe's technical support team, I was informed that starting from Illustrator 2022, this functionality was removed. I was also advised to submit a request through the community for its return.

Thus, I am formally requesting that this crucial functionality be reinstated. Our company heavily relies on DXF files, and manually regrouping all ungrouped components is not a viable solution. It significantly disrupts our workflow and causes unnecessary delays.

I trust that Adobe prioritizes a smooth and efficient user experience. Bringing back this functionality would greatly improve our productivity and maintain Illustrator as a valuable tool in our operations.

Thank you for your attention, and I appreciate your consideration of this request.

Best regards,

The same problem is happening to me! Inserted files are ungrouped which slows down our work,
which is why we have to use outdated versions of the program to get around this problem.

This is an important setup for our company, as we rely on the grouped patterns to localize prints.

I'm attaching a simple example below - I opened this DXF line pattern in Illustrator v2025 and all the seam connections (red circled) did not come grouped with the main pattern body (highlighted blue). It's crucial that the bodies that belong to the same main body come grouped, as they indicate precise locations to the real size pattern.  The seam allowance didn't come grouped to the main pattern body too.

I'm struggling with this issue too! In addition to not being able to use the 2021 version, I am unable to import the pattern files (DXF) so that they are grouped with the name and seam allowances for each size! Please reconsider!

The same thing is happening to me! Importing DXF files is an essential part of our work, and without this function, we're missing out on new updates and tools in Illustrator. Using the old version makes our process more difficult, and we’re not able to take full advantage of what Adobe has to offer.

I'm having the same problem! This function is essential for our work. I noticed the difference after updating Illustrator to a more recent version; all the templates become ungrouped when inserted into the file.
