Reshape Tool Not Working

Okay friends, I am having a TIME with the reshape tool, and have exhausted the internet for answers - to no avail!

I have a river-like shape that I cannot get to reshape. When I first moved the reshape tool to my tools panel, it did reshape! But then suddenly, it wouldn't work. Anytime I try to reshape the river, no matter where I click on the outer path, it only moves the shape around and adds an anchor point. It will NOT reshape it.

Screenshot attached to show what the river shape looks like. You can see the current anchor points.

Any suggestions here?

Correct answer tromboniator

Don't select the whole shape — select a segment of the path or an anchor point with the Direct Selection Tool (white pointer). That should allow you to reshape any part of the path, not just the selected portion.

try to disable the “Constrain Path Dragging on Segment Reshape”

Preference > Selection & Anchor Display > Constrain Path Dragging on Segment Reshape

and uncheck its.
