Retaining layers within a group in Illustrator

Is it possible to retain the layers of obects when grouped together?

Another option instead of grouping your objects is to select the "circle" icon to the right of your layer name, then shift click the circle icon on the other layers to select all of the objects if you need to move them.

    Clicking the circle targets the object or the layer. Especially targeting a layer might lead to surprising results. For selecting click to the right of the circle.

    No. Illustrator forgets them. You can create top level layers and put sublayers in them
