Question

Same gradient applied to other objects looks very different

Hi, I created a soft teal gradient that I love. But when I apply this gradient to a different object or even to a copy of the same object, it doesn't look the same. See attached file. The "good" gradient is on the top left. The applied gradient is not as nice, has darker edges, it's not what I want. But I haven't changed anything. This is in the same Illustrator file on the same page.

There's more. I can't even replicate the gradient for the original object. If I change the fill color on the original object and then re-apply the gradient, only the darker version appears, not the original blend I created. I'm only able to save the gradient because I have a copy of the original object.

What's going on here and how can I fix this? Has anyone come across something like this? I'm using Illustrator 25.2.1. On a Mac OS Mojave. The only thing I can think of--which is just occurring to me now-- is that I downgraded from AI 25.3 to 25.2 because I couldn't stand the constant auto-rotating while using my Wacom tablet. Could this change between AI versions have affected the gradient color rendering?

Any help or insight very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Does it work for you to select the object with the good gradient, open the Graphic Styles panel and add the gradient as a style, and then apply that style to other objects?

You need to show the gradient annotator. For this to work you need a few things

.

  1. Select an object with gradient
  2. Select the gradient tool
  3. View >> Show gradient annotator  (mine says hide as I have is set to show)

You can then pull the handles on the gradient annotator to fix, or with the gradient tool redraw the annotator path.

Unfortunately, the eyedropper does not pick up the gradient annotator path, so you cannot use the eyedropper to fix. If you have a fill that is not a gradient the eyedropper will pick up a gradient from another object but fill that from edge to edge of object.

I checked in the annotator (isn’t that the same as the Gradient Panel) and the settings are identical. Yet the gradients are different, as described.

Also, in the annotator tool, it’s impossible to click on the color stop without moving it. It works differently than anything I’ve seen before. There’s a stop on a measuring line, you have to click on the stop to see all of the CMYK values. BUT the stop is not fixed, whenever I click on it, it moves slightly. That’s crazy! It should be immobile so as not to change any values. I don’t get it.

In any case, this is just an observation. If I’m doing something wrong, please let me know. It has no bearing on my issue of this gradient not being reproduceable.

Thank you!
