Same project different devices

I work on projects on Illustrator with my apple laptop at home, then at my job I continue my projects on a Dell desktop. On my apple laptop afterwards it always ends up making a copy of the file with the changes and the original file without. How can I work on different devices on the same file without it making a copy?
