Question

save ai to svg

Hi. I am using Illustrator CC latest version. I have created a doc 1500 X 600 pixels, with 5 layers. Top layer contains placed png images, remainder contain simple objects which form colours in a design, separate layer for each colour. The doc needs to be saved to svg so it can be uploaded to a website where it will be editable by users. When I save it to svg then open the resulting doc in Illustrator it is exactly as I expect, the same as the illustrator original. When I email the svg doc to my colleague in another office, where they are using Illustrator CS6, the svg file is different when they open it. It is no longer 1500 X 600 pixels, it changes to a default size, looks like US Letter, and the layer order was changed.

If the other office uses CS6 to save my ai original to svg it all works correctly, so that is a workaround, but we are planning to create many docs and it will be a potential can of worms if we have to use this workaround.

Any ideas?

When you save as SVG from CC (2017), do you by any chance have the Responsive option enabled? This was a feature introduced in Illustrator CC, and is not available in Illustrator CS6.

    • In the SVG Options dialog box, click More Options to see the additional settings for saving to SVG.
    • I'm not 100% sure, but I think 'Responsive' is enabled by default, so I'd opt to try and save without this option selected, and see if that resolves the backward compatibility issue.

Let us know how you go.
