Save as (pdf) interrupts regular Save process

Accidentally we discovered that when you're too quick with the Save As after you've Save(d), the Save process is interrupted/overruled by the Save As process and the file is not Saved.

Here's the (reproduced) situation:
We sometimes have to make small (textual) edits in our Illustrator files, after which we need to produce a proof pdf for additional checks.
We edit the .ai file, press Save (to save the changes in the .ai) and immediately press Save As, change the file format to .pdf and save the document as a low res pdf.

When you then close the file and re-open the .ai (which you first saved) from which you made the pdf, the changes made are not saved in the .ai file.
It appears that the Save As (pdf) command cancels the Save (ai) command.

There is no notification, which you would expect and which was the case in the previous versions, that you cannot save as, because the file is being saved.

Is anyone else seeing this issue?

Mac, Catalina, Adobe CC 2021, Illustrator 25.2.1

In the File Handling section of Illustrator's preferences you'll see an option called "Save in Background". This feature allows the user to keep working even while the document is being saved. It more or less gives the illusion that the document has been saved and you can go on with whatever you need to do with the document. It seems, however, that this process gets interrupted when you proceed to use one of the other Save options, such as Save As. Try turning off this option. This way when you do the initial save it will be real. When the save is done then you can do the save as and all should be well.

Does it do the same if you disable Save in Background in AI Preferences>General?

I see this has been an issue for quite some time already, couldn't find anything on it prior, but here's another instance of the same problem. No solutions offered in said thread.
