Saved File Deleted Completely and Without a Trace?

I was working on a design proposal and saved it to a folder on my computer. I realized that I didn't have enough space so I did a disk cleanup. After this, I went back to the project in Illustrator, encountered an error message and it crashed. I attempted to open the project up to complete it but the file that I had saved moments before was no longer there. I've NEVER in all my years using technology have had a file that I saved just up and disappear. I would like some assistance in recovering this project file please.

Third party disk cleanup tools might ruin the delicate structure of AI files. On top of that, cleanup might have ruined your Illustrator installation.

Before doing a cleanup, migrate or update your system, always make a backup copy first. That won't help you now unfortunately. If the file cannot be found anymore, then it might actually be lost.

First thing I would do now is buy additional hard disks.
