Scale shapes with text without converting text to outlines?

Illustrator CC

I have a text box grouped with a shape. If I scale them while holding SHIFT, the text and the shape enlarge, but the shape doesn't maintain its relative position to the text.

How can I scale text with shapes without converting the text to outlines?

I don't know what "area text" is but I didn't make it with the Area Type Tool, if that's what you mean. I made it with the Type Tool.

There are different line heights throughout the text.

I guess I have to keep making outlines, or bite the bullet and switch to InDesign.

Thanks for the help anyway

If you click and type with the Type tool, you get Point text. Resizing with the selection tool resizes the text and Shift is required to keep it proportional. It does not wrap to the next line.

If you drag and type with the Type tool, you get Area type. Resizing with the selection tool resizes the frame and the text will reflow.

There is a widget to the far right of either. Double-click to convert to the other.

Thanks for the quick reply:)

Here's a screenshot. Notice how the shape near WOK and the chilis change position.

And the text is an area text?

What you're doing there will work a lot easier in InDesign.

It's regular text made with the Type tool.

Yeah, I thought about doing it in InDesign, but I'm passed the point of no return now .

It should be working, having the objects grouped should be enough to have them maintain their relative position to each other. Holding Shift just scales them proportionally.

I agree with Monika, a before and after screenshot may help to work out why it hasn't worked as expected.
