Scaling objects and texts made harder by Adobe

I used to be able to scale my objects, pics, and text just by selecting the item with my select tool (V) and using the handles that appeared. But those handles are suddenly gone when I select with the select tool. Instead, I have to type the letter E to bring up the free transform tool. Can I get this back to normal?

By the way the shortcut for bounding box on/off is [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[B]

Most of the time, on a QWERTY keyboard, it is accidentally pressed instead of Paste in Place [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[V] or Ungroup [Shift]+[Ctrl]+[G]

… or sometimes by a walking cat

Or by using the short cut to try and force faux bold type.

Yes, that fixed it! Thank you so much! WHY ON EARTH would this just happen randomly?

Nobody knows why, it may be caused by accidentally hitting a key combination.
